Renato's Jewelers

About

Over 30 years ago, Renato Tornifoglia was playing video games in a corner store in his Bridgeport neighborhood. The jeweler next door noticed how good he was with his hands, and asked Renato if he'd like to learn the business. He was just 11 years old. Of course he'd like to - what a great chance to work with metal, torches and fire! Two years later, the jeweler's father retired. The son brought Renato to Westport, where he met Bob Hampel of New England Jewelers. Renato spent 27 years, off and on, at the Main Street store. Along the way he earned a degree in architecture. Two years ago, Hampel retired. Renato branched out, opening Renato's Jewelers on Post Road West, near Pepperidge Farms. He moved to Westfair Center, opposite Super Stop & Shop, just over a year ago. It's a thriving place. Renato - who learned the business very quickly, from the day he picked up his first torch and loupe - enjoys every aspect of his work . He fabricates special orders, creates unique designs, sets stones, fixes chains and does other repair work(including for many other stores in town). Along the way, he becomes part of customers' lives. Some even have his cell number, and call him at home whenever an inspiration for a new piece of jewelry strikes."That's fine. It's the personal touch," Renato explains. "We'll talk. They'll send a photo of something that they saw online. Then I work with them to make it happen. Sometimes they're not sure, or I'm not sure - but we work together, and it ends up looking good." The payoff comes when customers pick up a new piece -and smile with delight. Renato's Jewelers is an active place. His four employees have been in the business for a long time - and the owner has known them since he was a teenager. Two famous Westport names - Dave and Kathy Swezey - help out on occasion. The rise of the internet has hurt many small business owners, and jewelers are no exception. But, Renato says, cyberspace can never replace the personal attention he gives his customers."People come in to the store, and say there's something wrong with a piece they bought online," he says. "I'll fix it, ,because I want them to be happy. But whether they bought it from me or not, service is a big part of what I do."Renato heads off to set another stone, check on another order, greet old customers and new ones."I hope to be here a long time," he says. "Maybe my three boys will run this some day."As he knows so well, it doesn't hurt to start when you're young.

Very reliable

This is where I have gotten things made, repaired, for decades. I will never go to a regular jeweler again. Renato knows his stuff and doesn't gouge like the Main Street stores do
